What a long and proud history we’ve had! When asked “which is the oldest Catholic Church in the state of New Jersey”, the Historian for the Diocese of Paterson, Msgr. Raymond Kupke, explains that it all depends on what exactly one means by the word “church”. If by “church” one means a congregation with a resident pastor, then we, the current Cathedral of Paterson, St. John the Baptist, can make the claim of being the oldest, for we had the first priest permanently assigned to New Jersey. Father Stephen Bulger was assigned to reside at St. John’s by the Bishop of New York in 1820. Our current church building, built between 1865-1870, is the third church for our congregation. The first building was on the corner of Market and Mill Streets and the second was on Oliver Street.
In 1863 Fr. McNultey, St. John’s Pastor, recognized that the church on Oliver Street had become too small and could no longer hold the large numbers which gathered in it each Sunday. He thus entered into negotiations with the Society of Establishing Useful Manufacturers and in 1865 purchased from the Society 16 lots on the corner of Grand and Main Streets. According to Charles Shriner, in his History of the Catholic Church in Paterson, N.J. (1883), “The new enterprise seemed to infuse new vigor into the members of the congregation and the full amount of the purchase money of the real estate was raised in 2 months. On September 10, 1865, the cornerstone was laid. An immense concourse of people, numbering probably 10,000, gathered at 3:00 at the site of the new Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist, to witness the ceremony of laying the corner stone of the edifice.” During the blessing of the cornerstone, Bishop Bayley stated, “The erection of a church is a noble and substantial act of faith; not expressed in words but built up in enduring brick and stone.” Like Fr. McNultey, Msgr. Mark Giordani, 25 years ago, realized the need for additional space to accommodate our expanding parish community and blessed us with the tremendous parish center and gym that we now enjoy and are updating to make more secure and handicapped accessible.
My friends, how blessed we are to have the very same challenge today that the good people of St. John’s experienced over 150 years ago and, yet again, 25 years ago: Our facilities can on long accommodate our vibrant ministries/outreaches and our dreams for the promotion of the new evangelization here in Paterson and beyond! While we do not need to purchase land to build a church or a gym, we are in need of a building where groups can meet to reflect on God’s Word, children can be taught the Catholic faith, adults can be escorted to the reception of the Easter Sacraments, teens can discover that they are indeed children of God, the elderly can fight off loneliness, the poor can receive a helping hand, and the Spanish Apostolate can flourish. How blessed we are by God to have been called—in this moment of history—to be members of this flourishing faith community, and to have the opportunity to leave behind a new faith formation building for generations to come! How I dream, that at the blessing of its cornerstone, we have 10,000 people present! Our future starts today!

¡Qué extensa y orgullosa historia nosotros hemos tenido! Cuando se pregunta "cuál es la Iglesia Católica más antigua del estado de New Jersey", el Historiador de la Diócesis de Paterson, Mons. Raymond Kupke, explica que todo depende de lo que uno quiere decir exactamente con la palabra "Iglesia". Si por "Iglesia" se entiende una feligresía con un párroco residente, entonces nosotros, la actual Catedral de Paterson, San Juan el Bautista, podemos afirmar de ser la más antigua, ya que tuvimos al primer sacerdote asignado permanentemente a New Jersey. El Padre Stephen Bulger fue asignado a residir en San Juan por el Obispo de NewYork en 1820. Nuestro edificio actual de la iglesia, construido entre 1865-1870, es la tercera Iglesia de nuestra feligresía. El primer edificio estaba en la esquina de las calles Market y Mill y el segundo estaba en la calle Oliver.

Durante la bendición de la piedra angular, El obispo Bayley dijo: “La construcción de una Iglesia es un acto de fe noble y sustancial; no expresado en palabras, sino construido en ladrillo y piedra duraderos”. Como el Padre McNultey, Mons. Mark Giordani hace 25 años, se dio cuenta de la necesidad de espacio adicional para dar cabida a nuestra comunidad parroquial en expansión y nos bendijo con el formidable centro parroquial y gimnasio que ahora disfrutamos y que estamos remodelando para que sea más seguro y accesible para discapacitados.
Mis amigos, que bendecidos somos de tener el mismo desafío hoy que las buenas personas de San Juan experimentaron hace más de 150 años y, una vez más, hace 25 años: nuestras instalaciones pueden acomodar nuestros vibrantes ministerios / iniciativas y nuestros sueños. ¡Por la promoción de la Nueva Evangelización aquí en Paterson y más allá! Si bien no necesitamos comprar terrenos para construir una Iglesia o un gimnasio, necesitamos un edificio donde los grupos puedan reunirse para reflexionar sobre la Palabra de Dios, a los niños se les puede enseñar la fe católica, se puede acompañar a los adultos a recepción de los sacramentos de Pascuales, los jóvenes pueden descubrir que de hecho son hijos de Dios, los ancianos pueden luchar contra la soledad, los pobres pueden recibir una mano amiga y el apostolado español sigue floreciendo. ¡Que bendecidos somos por Dios al haber sido llamados, en este momento de la historia, a ser miembros de esta floreciente comunidad de fe y tener la oportunidad de dejar nuestro legado de una nueva formación de fe para las generaciones venideras! ¡Cómo sueño, que, con la bendición de la piedra angular, tengamos 10,000 personas presentes! ¡ Nuestro futuro comienza hoy!
