The Cathedral’s Implementation of Pope Francis’ Pastoral Plan
From Mercy to Hope!
 
In St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, the great Apostle writes to the faithful in Corinth: “So faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” How often have we heard these words at weddings and during Masses, often believing that they are listed in a chronological order, meaning that it is faith that comes first, then hope, and, finally, love. Yet Pope Francis, in his preaching and his teaching, is helping the Church to realize the truth expressed by St. Paul that it is love, because it is the greatest, that must come first. In fact, love is so great that it leads to faith, and it is faith that leads to hope.
 
Friends, it is from within this very dynamic of a circular structure that we can come to understand the pastoral plan of Pope Francis—love opens one to faith and faith sustains love. Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, describes the Holy Father’s emphasis upon personal encounter as, “It is love that generates faith, and faith which sustains love. . . . Someone believes if he or she is loved.” Love opens up to us a knowledge of a truth that, previously, was unhoped for and unexpected, but which has become real and visible. It is love which enables us to recognize the needs of others, not as an external reality, but as those of brothers and sisters who are suffering and who are in need. Someone believes if he or she is loved! As Pope Francis stated in the Bull of Indiction announcing the Jubilee of Mercy: “Mercy is the very foundation of the Church’s life… Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instils in us the courage to look to the future with hope.” It is here that we see that for Pope Francis, the mission of the new evangelization, of reawakening people to love, faith and hope, is carried out by being and doing mercy for, as Pope Francis had stated: “Mercy is the bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness.”
 
Thus, it is with great joy that I share with you a new outreach for the promotion of the mission of the new evangelization here at the Cathedral entitled, From Mercy to Hope. A committee has been formed comprised of men and women representing St. John’s Cathedral, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Eva’s Village, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Paterson, and law enforcement agencies. This committee has worked to construct a survey listing what they believe to be some of the most pressing human needs of our families and our neighbors. At all of the Masses this weekend, we will be asking each of you to list what you believe to be the most pressing 3 human needs that should be addressed through this outreach. Once we receive and study your feedback, we will then proceed to implement a strategic plan for helping to provide mercy in these particular areas of need. Stay tuned for more to come! How exciting it is to be the merciful hands of our God who is love and to open people faith and hope!
 

De la misericordia a la esperanza!

 
En la primera carta de San Pablo a los corintios, el gran apóstol escribe a los fieles de Corinto: “Así que la fe, la esperanza y el amor permanecen, estos tres; pero el más grande de estos es el amor”. ¿Cuántas veces hemos escuchado estas palabras en las bodas y durante las Misas, a menudo creyendo que están enumeradas en un orden cronológico, lo que significa que lo primero es la fe, luego la esperanza y, finalmente, el amor?. Sin embargo, el Papa Francisco, en su predicación y su enseñanza, está ayudando a la Iglesia a darse cuenta de la verdad expresada por San Pablo de que es el amor, porque es lo más importante, lo que debe venir primero. De hecho, el amor es tan grande que conduce a la fe, y es la fe la que conduce a la esperanza.
Amigos, es desde esta dinámica estructura de la que podemos entender el plan pastoral del Papa Francisco: el amor se abre a la fe y la fe sostiene el amor. El arzobispo Rino Fisichella, presidente del Consejo Pontificio para la Promoción de la Nueva Evangelización, describe el énfasis del Santo Padre en el encuentro personal como: “Es el amor lo que genera la fe y la fe lo que sostiene el amor. . . . Alguien cree que si él o ella es amado”. El amor nos abre el conocimiento de una verdad que, anteriormente, no se buscaba y era inesperada, pero que se ha vuelto real y visible. Es el amor el que nos permite reconocer las necesidades de los demás, no como una realidad externa, sino como los hermanos y hermanas que están sufriendo y que están en necesidad. ¡Alguien cree que si él o ella es amado! Como el Papa Francisco declaró en el la Bula de inducción que anunciaba el Jubileo de la Misericordia: “La misericordia es el fundamento mismo de la vida de la Iglesia ... La misericordia es la fuerza que nos despierta a una nueva vida y nos infunde el valor de mirar el futuro con esperanza. "Es aquí donde vemos que, para el Papa Francisco, la misión de la nueva evangelización, de despertar a la gente al amor, la fe y la esperanza, se lleva a cabo siendo y haciendo misericordia para, como el Papa Francisco había dicho:" La misericordia es el puente. eso conecta a Dios y al hombre, abriendo nuestros corazones a la esperanza de ser amados para siempre a pesar de nuestro pecado”.
Por lo tanto, es con gran alegría que comparto con ustedes una nueva manera para la promoción de la misión de la nueva evangelización aquí en la Catedral titulada, De la Misericordia a la Esperanza. Se ha formado un comité compuesto por hombres y mujeres que representan a la catedral de San Juan, el hospital de San José, la villa de Eva, las Caridades Católicas de la Diócesis de Paterson y las agencias de cumplimiento de la ley. Este comité ha trabajado para construir una encuesta con una lista de lo que creen que son algunas de las necesidades humanas más apremiantes de nuestras familias y nuestros vecinos. En todas las Misas de este fin de semana, les pediremos a cada uno de ustedes que enumeren cuáles creen que son las 3 necesidades humanas más apremiantes que deben abordarse a través de esta campaña. Una vez que recibamos y estudiemos sus comentarios, procederemos a implementar un plan estratégico para ayudar a brindar misericordia en estas áreas particulares de necesidad. ¡Estén atentos hay más por venir! ¡Qué emocionante es ser las manos misericordiosas de nuestro Dios que es amor y abrir a las personas la fe y la esperanza!
