Why a Manger?
 
Why did God choose a manger into which to be born? This is not simply some incidental that can be enjoyed by artists as a backdrop to the incarnation. The shepherds were told that they would find a child in a manger for animals. The animals represent all of humanity in need of a Savior; the God who became an infant. Just as animals must eat and drink, so must men and women. However, we do not live by bread alone. We need nourishment of the soul. We need meaning that can fill our lives. Thus, the manger becomes a symbol of the altar, on which lies the Bread which is Christ Himself. This is the true food for the nourishment of our hearts. Every time Mass is celebrated, we see our God again becoming small. However, this time not as a humble child but in the humble appearance of the host, a small piece of bread. He gives us Himself.
          Each time we take the journey to the altar—our Bethlehem—we are taking a journey of the heart, a journey no artist can capture or words express, for it is Divine. It is a journey that will bring us to what we were made for— Joy!

¿Por qué un pesebre?
 
¿Por qué Dios escogió un pesebre para nacer? Esto no es simplemente algo accidental que pueden apreciar los artistas como telón de fondo de la encarnación. A los pastores les dijeron que encontrarían un niño en un pesebre para animales. Los animales representan a toda la humanidad en necesidad de un Salvador; El Dios que se hizo infante. Así como los animales deben comer y beber, también deben hacerlo los hombres y las mujeres. Sin embargo, no vivimos solo de pan. Necesitamos el alimento del alma. Necesitamos descubrir el sentido que llene nuestras vidas. Así, el pesebre se convierte en un símbolo del altar, sobre el cual se encuentra el Pan que es Cristo mismo. Este es el verdadero alimento para nuestros corazones. Cada vez que se celebra la misa, vemos a nuestro Dios nuevamente haciéndose pequeño. Sin embargo, esta vez no como un niño humilde, sino en la apariencia humilde de una hostia, un pequeño trozo de pan. Él se nos da a sí mismo.
Cada vez que hacemos el viaje hacia el altar, nuestro Belén, estamos haciendo un viaje de corazón, un viaje que ningún artista puede capturar o expresar en palabras, porque es Divino. Es un viaje que nos llevará hacia lo que fuimos creados: ¡Por Alegría!
 
En nombre de los sacerdotes, los diáconos y todo el personal de la catedral de San Juan, ¡qué alegría tan increíble es hacer este viaje con ustedes cada semana al altar y celebrar el don de Dios mismo! Feliz Navidad para ti y tu familia !!!!
