Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and the New Evangelization
With the heart of Christianity being Jesus Christ, the path of the new evangelization is
marked out for each one of us. We are called to renew the proclamation of Jesus Christ, the
mystery of His death and resurrection and to bring about anew faith in Him by a life of
conversion. Moreover, we are called to model what the early Church did in its beginning. The
discourse of Peter on the day of Pentecost sets the course for us:
“Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs
which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves knows—this Jesus, delivered
up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the
hands of lawless men. But God raised Him up. Now when they heard this, they were cut to
the heart, and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘What are we to do, my brothers?’ And
Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and be baptized ever one of you in the name of Jesus Christ’”
(Acts 2).
Peter wanted people to be baptized into Christ! This page of our history is an indication
of a path that needs to be undertaken by the Church as an ever-renewed and current Pentecost.
The new evangelization, therefore, requires the ability to give reasons for one’s faith, showing
Jesus Christ as the only savior of humanity. The new evangelization starts here: from the belief
that grace acts and transforms to the point of converting the heart. It is now time that we throw
open wide our “doors” and return to announcing the resurrection of Christ, of which we are all
witnesses.
And how do with do this? We do so by inviting others to an active sacramental life in the
Church! I was once waiting in line at a supermarket and the woman in front of me noticed I was
a priest and said, “I’ve not been to Church in so many years. And I’ve never received my
Confirmation.” When I then asked her, “why?” I was shocked by her reply: “Because nobody has
ever asked me to come back or to receive Confirmation.” Friends, I’m sure that we all have people
in our lives who have drifted away from the practice of faith or who have never received the
Sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, or Confirmation. Maybe it’s time to take to heart the
words of St. Peter and invite them home to the Church and the Sacraments of Christ.

members of our St. John’s community journey along with those to receive the Easter Sacraments.

Rito de iniciación cristiana de adultos y la nueva evangelización
Con el corazón del cristianismo como Jesucristo, el camino de la nueva evangelización
está marcado para cada uno de nosotros. Estamos llamados a renovar la proclamación de
Jesucristo, el misterio de su muerte y resurrección, y a traer una nueva fe en Él mediante una
vida de conversión. Además, estamos llamados a modelar lo que hizo la Iglesia primitiva en sus
comienzos. El discurso de Pedro el día de Pentecostés nos marca el rumbo:
"Jesús de Nazaret, un hombre enviado por Dios con poderosas obras, maravillas y señales
que Dios hizo a través de Él en medio de ustedes, como ustedes mismos saben, este
Jesús, entregado de acuerdo con el plan definitivo y el conocimiento previo de Dios,
crucificado y asesinado por manos de hombres sin ley. Pero Dios lo levantó. Cuando
oyeron esto, fueron cortados hasta el corazón y dijeron a Pedro y a los demás apóstoles:
"¿Qué debemos hacer, mis hermanos?" Y Pedro les dijo: "Arrepiéntanse y sean
bautizados cada uno de ustedes en el nombre de Jesucristo”. (Hechos 2).
¡Pedro quería que las personas fueran bautizadas en Cristo! Esta página de nuestra
historia es una indicación de un camino que la Iglesia debe emprender como un Pentecostés
siempre renovado y actual. La nueva evangelización, por lo tanto, requiere la capacidad de dar
razones para la fe de uno, mostrando a Jesucristo como el único salvador de la humanidad. La
nueva evangelización comienza aquí: desde la creencia de que la gracia actúa y se transforma
hasta el punto de convertir el corazón. Es hora de que abramos de par en par nuestras "puertas"
y volvamos a anunciar la resurrección de Cristo, de la cual todos somos testigos.
¿Y cómo hacer con esto? ¡Lo hacemos invitando a otros a una vida sacramental activa en
la Iglesia! Una vez estaba esperando en la línea de un supermercado y la mujer frente a mí notó
que era un sacerdote y dijo: "No he estado en la Iglesia por varios años. Y nunca he recibido mi
Confirmación ". Cuando le pregunté," ¿por qué? "Me sorprendió su respuesta:" Porque nadie me
ha pedido que regrese o reciba la Confirmación ". Amigos, estoy seguro de que Todos tenemos
personas en nuestras vidas que se han alejado de la práctica de la fe o que nunca han recibido
los sacramentos del bautismo, la primera comunión o la confirmación. Tal vez es hora de tomar
en serio las palabras de San Pedro e invitarlos a su hogar en la Iglesia y los Sacramentos de
Cristo.
